AMBULANCE
n. f.

Sorte d’hôpital militaire qui suit une armée, un corps d’armée ou une division pour en recueillir les malades et les blessés. L’ambulance peut être établie dans un bâtiment près du champ de bataille, ou sous une tente, ou même en pleine campagne, derrière les rangs de l’armée. Voiture d’ambulance. Aller à l’ambulance. Porter des blessés à l’ambulance. Chirurgien d’ambulance. Infirmier d’ambulance. Assurer le service d’ambulance. Les ambulances du front, de l’arrière.

Par extension, il se dit aussi d’un établissement hospitalier temporaire, pour suppléer aux hôpitaux dans une épidémie, durant une guerre ou en cas d’accident. On a établi partout des ambulances. Ambulances urbaines.
